Road Trip from Frazier–Tejon: Visit North America’s Lowest Point

For a road trip from the Frazier–Tejon region, how about heading below sea level? Death Valley’s Badwater Basin sits 282 feet below sea level, making it the lowest point in North America. It is not the lowest place on Earth, but its broad salt flats and mountain backdrop make it a memorable destination.

Make it a weekend adventure

Allow for a substantial drive. A representative route from Frazier Park, one community within the wider Frazier–Tejon region, was approximately 265 miles and 4½ hours each way when checked October 22, 2026. Your distance and time will vary from other mountain communities and the Tejon corridor. That example adds up to about 530 miles and nine hours of driving before stops, so an overnight or weekend visit leaves more room to enjoy it.

What you’ll find

Badwater Road leads to the Basin, about 17 miles south of Furnace Creek. Enjoy the salt-flat views from the parking area and boardwalk, or take a short walk during cooler weather. The patterned salt surface is the attraction; follow existing walked paths to limit damage. NPS visitor guide.

Plan before you go

Fall, winter and spring are the better seasons to consider. Check the forecast and prepare for desert conditions; extreme summer heat makes outdoor exploring hazardous. Park admission or an accepted pass is required.

Road note, checked October 22, 2026: NPS reports flood-damaged sections of southern Badwater Road beyond the Basin toward Shoshone, including gravel, soft shoulders and unpaved stretches. The example route approaches from the north via CA-190 and Furnace Creek. Recheck official park conditions and your route before leaving; this is an adventure idea, not a guarantee of road access.

This idea was prompted by Jalopnik’s feature on Badwater Road. Visitor facts and the road caution above were checked against National Park Service information.
