Some of our region’s most meaningful work happens away from public view. Lockwood Animal Rescue Center connects two missions: caring for rescued animals and supporting military veterans through meaningful work and connection.

A lifelong home

LARC says it provides lifelong sanctuary care for wolves, wolfdogs, horses and other rescued animals. Its rescue work includes animals coming from breeding operations, roadside zoos and shelters, with care at LARC or placement through other sanctuaries.

The focus is on the animals’ long-term needs, rather than treating them as pets or public attractions.

Wolves and Warriors

Through Wolves and Warriors, veterans help care for rescued wolves and wolfdogs. LARC describes a nature-based setting built around practical responsibilities, relationships with animals and support from fellow veterans.

Its stated mission includes employment and job-skill development for combat veterans. Those interested can review the organization’s veteran opportunities; participation requires advance arrangements and screening.

Support without a visit

LARC is not open to the general public for tours or visits. Its visitor policy explains that this protects the animals and respects veterans’ and neighbors’ privacy. Please do not arrive unannounced or drop off supplies without arrangements.

For those who would like to help, LARC’s official support page lists donations, a supply wish list and ways to stay informed. Check its current instructions before contributing goods.

For our mountain communities, LARC is a reminder that a local organization can have an impact far beyond the region, while doing work that deserves both recognition and respect for its privacy.
